Thoughts on Editing

Editing is a wonderful and exciting way to bring films and TV shows to life. It is a way of visualising what a fictional world looks like as well as imagining characters in a mythical and fictional way. The process of editing is very exciting and exhilarating with the idea of adding music and sound effects as well as visual and special effects. Take the film series ‘The Avengers’ for example, actors film behind a blue and green screen, then in post-production visual effects editors bring the mythical planets to life adding in colour, sound and imagery to make the audience feel as if they were in the same location as the characters.

Even though there are amazing aspects in editing, the process is VERY time consuming and tiring. There may be a version that you think you are happy and content with, but the director may have a different visualisation, hence the editors adding more effects or colour tone to the scene. With myself being a university student studying filmmaking, I am learning various ways in which you can improve upon your rough edit cuts. I have recently edited a 3 episode mini-series called ‘Is Cereal A Soup’. I submitted a final cut of all the edits that needed to be made. I followed notes my tutor left for me making sure I have ticked off what was necessary. However, there were a few mistakes and errors that needed to be amended therefore, I had to make another final cut in order to fix up those mistakes.

The moral of the story is that one final cut is never good enough to publish straight away. Even if you have reviewed the edit multiple times, there are always going to be small errors. My tip for all editors out there is that make sure you have reviewed the edit over and over again and look for small mistakes such as audio issues and cut aways that are placed in the appropriate spot.
