The Process of Editing

I have just wrapped up editing Episode 2 for ‘Is Cereal A Soup?’. In order for the episode to flow, I had to match up each shot from a certain camera for when a particular guest is speaking. For instance, if one guest on the left started to speak I had to make sure that I included the camera shot that fit with that particular guest speaking. As multiple takes had to be shit, finding the perfect take for the block took some time as I had to keep in mind of other shots that have been made from the other 3 cameras.

The editing program I used to develop the episode was Davinci Resolve. I had previously used this editing program so I knew the basics of how to combine clips as well as cut and paste clips in order for the episode to flow. It took me about 2–3 days to edit the episode perfectly; making sure that the timing was right for each section of the episode as well as making sure that the audio fit well with a certain clip.

Stepping into the role of an editor, specific duties included taking notes while the episode is on air so that I know specifically what shot is the most appropriate to use as well as making notes about which guest to cut to when another guest is speaking in order to show their facial expressions. While this was a student project, on a real TV production there will be more than one editor behind the scenes. Whether that would be a graphic designer, visual effects editor or special effects editor.
