Internship Update
As part of my degree for University, I had to partake in an internship. It took me a while to find the right one for me in order to get a kick start in my career in the film industry. I applied for a not-for-profit organisation called Bus Stop Films that create films based around people with disabilities. Fortunately, I was accepted into the programme as a marketing intern, looking after their social media pages as well as filming behind the scenes of their short films.
As a marketing student, I was able to post interesting and exciting news from the film industry in terms of what films involve people with disabilities as well as updates on what awards Bus Stop Films have gained. Within this internship, I have had the opportunity to go on set of their short films across Greater Sydney from Redfern to Miranda, filming behind the scenes and updating followers on Instagram.
The first shoot I went to was filmed at The Bearded Tit Bar at Redfern on Sunday 17 October 2021 for their romantic-comedy short film called ‘Hopeful Romantic’. My duties for this film included social media takeovers as well as a production assistant. As this was my first time experiencing stepping into the role as a production assistant, my job description included coffee runs for cast and crew as well as making sure both the set and green room were clean and tidy. It was a very long day starting from 8am and finishing at about 7pm. Although I was a production assistant and marketing intern, there was a lot of sitting around when the cameras were rolling but I still managed to find things to do such as speak to crew and the Bus Stop Films students.
The second shoot I attended was filmed at the Bus Stop Film’s CEO’s best friends house at Miranda on Saturday 30 October for their romance/action film called ‘For Better, For Worse’. This shoot was originally meant to be shot on Saturday 23 October, however due to close covid-19 contacts between crew members, it had to be postponed for health and safety reasons. During this film I was assisting another intern to capture behind the scenes footage as well as posting content on the Instagram page. The difference between this film and the one shot at Redfern was the fact that The Bearded Tit was tight spaced and everyone was shoulder to shoulder with everyone, not having enough room to move around, whereas this film was shot at a home with plenty of space to move around in and having that homey feeling. I was also able to be a lot more involved in the filmmaking process as we interviewed several crew members, Bus Stop Films students and a couple of the cast members.
On Friday 5 November, I had the amazing opportunity of visiting the ABC Studios located in Ultimo, Sydney to have a guided tour of the various stages used for productions as well as behind the scenes of how they produce a show such as visiting the control which involves audio and vision switching as well as seeing what cameras are used and how they are operated. As a marketing student, I had the job of capturing behind the scenes footage of the experience as well as editing the final piece together as well as social media takeovers. We also got to witness the filming of ‘Dignified Storytelling’ which involved a panel discussion between the CEO of Bus Stop Films (Tracey Corbin-Matchett), a cinematographer (Mikey Hamer), actress (Audrey O’Connor) and filmmaker (Hawantu Bangura). Visiting the ABC Studios was a once in a lifetime experience and I had an amazing time chatting to the panel members and staff among witnessing how productions are made in the studios.
